Partnership With Industry For Exchange In Manufacturing Engineering Education

In today’s competitive manufacturing environment, more is expected from manufacturing engineers. Engineers that possess sound theoretical knowledge of engineering disciplines and have practical experience are needed. The Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing (ERC/NSM) believes that a partnership with industry and engineering students will allow students to develop the manufacturing experience and skills that the manufacturing industry expects. The following is a suggested scheme.

  • Cooperative Education (Co-op)

Through the OSU Co-op office, ERC/NSM will work with industry to find undergraduate students that have an interest in manufacturing. Companies will be able to interview and employ students as always, but now also interview students that have an interest in manufacturing.

  • Research Work at the ERC/NSM

After the student has completed their first co-op quarter (3 months) with industry, the company will have the opportunity to employ the student at ERC/NSM to work on a project selected by the company and within the capabilities of the ERC/NSM.

  • Graduate Studies at the ERC/NSM

After the student has completed his/her undergraduate studies, the company and student can decide whether full time employment with the company is possible. However, students interested in graduate studies may continue their education in manufacturing at the ERC/NSM as a graduate research associate or fellow. The ERC/NSM and the Ohio State University have one of the best manufacturing laboratory complexes among North American universities and an excellent manufacturing program. We believe that graduate work at the ERC/NSM will give students additional experience and knowledge in manufacturing that the competitive and global environment of the new century demands.
